ALICE HASTERS »ANTI OPFER. WARUM WIR VERLETZLICHKEIT VERACHTEN«
In the organizer's words:
Once again this year, the Cultural Office is pleased to participate in the “Action Weeks Against Exclusion and Discrimination” program. Three different readings will offer thought-provoking insights into socially relevant topics—by those affected, for those affected, and for anyone else who would like to learn more and get involved. Exchange of ideas, personal accounts, and discussion are not only encouraged but expressly welcomed.
On September 15, Alice Hasters will visit us and speak, among other things, about her book *Anti-Victim: Why We Despise Vulnerability*. She says: People talk about “victims” everywhere. But increasingly, this doesn’t refer to people who have suffered injustice. Rather, it refers to those who disrupt harmony, who are considered soft, who drag others down, or who want to put themselves above others. If they didn’t complain so much, people say, we wouldn’t have so many problems. Harshness toward others is increasingly seen as desirable—and while inhumanly high demands are placed on victims, powerful alliances of patriarchal complicity are changing our world for the worse. Alice Hasters describes a cultural shift that is no coincidence that it goes hand in hand with a resurgence of authoritarianism and fascism. What happens to a society in which sensitivity is considered elitist? And the right of the stronger as authentic? With intellectual restlessness, she contrasts the spread of this new harshness with the political power of solidarity.
