EXHIBITION: IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE DIECK FAMILY

At the end of the 19th century, Germany forcibly annexed territories outside of Europe. As a result, people from the colonized African territories migrated to Germany. During the Nazi “racial policies,” many Black people were forcibly sterilized or murdered in concentration camps and hospitals. After 1945, the survivors were once again marginalized. It was not until the Black Women’s Movement of the 1980s that this history began to be addressed—including the life stories of the Diek family, whose journey led them from Cameroon to Germany in 1891. Activist and descendant Abenaa Adomako guides visitors through the exhibition.
