Bosnian-American author, essayist, critic and screen writer Aleksandar Hemon presents his new work "The World and All That It Holds " .
The long-awaited novel takes readers back to the time of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and tells the story of Rafael Pinto, who finds himself behind the counter of his father's inherited pharmacy in Sarajevo when war breaks out and devours everything.From then on, Pinto lives off the affection of his comrade Osman, in whom Pinto's poetic soul is reflected .A charismatic storyteller and Pinto's protector and lover. Together, Pinto and Osman escape the trenches and fall into the clutches of spies and Bolsheviks. In Hemon's epic novel, described as "brilliant" by the Washington Post and a "masterpiece" by David Mitchell, author of Cloud Atlas, the protagonists, driven far from Sarajevo by the Great War, sing songs to each other to express their longing for home and each other.
Aleksandar Hemon was born in Bosnia in 1964. When he was on a cultural exchange in the USA in 1992 and learned of the beginning of the siege of Sarajevo, he decided to remain in exile. His novels, short stories and collections of short stories are published by literary publishers in numerous countries around the world. Aleksandar Hemon lives in Chicago. Aleksandar Hemon and singer Damir Imamović, the well-known representative of the traditional Bosnian style Sevdah, will then present a special performance at the Fat Cat (old Gasteig building) on Sunday 21.04.2024 at 8 pm. Damir Imamović presents his Smithsonian Folkways debut "The World And All That It Holds". These songs, inspired by the epic novel of the same name by Bosnian-American author Aleksandar Hemon , tell stories of love, loss, hardship and perseverance. To the Šta Ima!? Festival: Literature, art and culture from the former Yugoslavia and the Western Balkans
balkaNet e.V. is pleased to announce the revival of the Šta Ima! Festival and invite you to an extraordinary series of events! The Šta Ima! Festival was launched in 2014 by the Munich City Library and the Munich Adult Education Center and has now been continued by the cultural worker and musician Asmir Šabić and balkaNet e.V., who already co-organized the festival in 2014. In 2024, there will be a unique opportunity to revive the festival and create a series of events that explore the rich cultural history and identity of the Western Balkans region and ex-Yugoslavian countries through literature, art and music.
