Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945), inspired by Impressionism and Symbolism? These two facets belong to the lesser known sides of her œuvre. The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud focuses on three exceptional works from the collection of the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Cologne that demonstrate the influence of modernism on the artist's early work.
The intervention juxtaposes two oil studies, little known to the public, that Kollwitz created during her student years in Munich with paintings by her patron Max Liebermann (1847-1935). Elsewhere, an etching created in the context of the Weber cycle meets works by her model Max Klinger (1857-1920) and other Symbolists: encounters that shed new light on the young artist's talent in the face of her famous contemporaries.
