Bibiza
Vienna Schickeria Tour 2024
Nicki Papa
BIBIZA Franz is a true Viennese - from Zehnsechzig, Mariahilf. He is twenty-four and still lives there. The Mariahilf district coat of arms is a whole comic strip - and in the middle of it, BIBIZA Franz stands on a boat as his alter ego Don Juan de Austria. Someone has to imitate him first. He almost became an East Tyrolean. But no way. He sometimes calls his city "Bebi", he hates and loves it, as befits an, well, artist.
His genetic background wasn't exactly artistic - no matter, he still wanted to make music. So he made beats and rapped, it felt right, and that's how he got to know musicians. The first tracks that were created in this way were presented to the world on two albums in the 1920s: "Zwei Zöpfe auf dem Kopf" and "Lebe wie ein Hippie". There are fundamental observations such as: "Ich steige aus der Dusche und fühl mich frisch", "Fick die Welt" or "Pilgramgasse", in which he dares to predict: "Das Leben kommt so wie bestellt."
Which brings us directly to the year twenty-three - the first proper BIBIZA album "Wiener Schickeria" was released in May, and it turned out very cool. You can imagine it as a slap in the face with a wink. Or drinking and smoking at the same time. And so on.
The door to BIBIZA's fancy-pants world, which is of course ruled by Marie , is opened for us by the Viennese acting legend Ofczarek himself. He says good morning and sends Franz on a wild odyssey across the Opernring to the Stadtpark, we visit the haute volee on the balcony, see who is studying at the Academy of Fine Arts , drive along the Höhenstraße directly to the villa and finally realize that we are in the middle of Babylon all the time anyway. There's no escape - and the intoxication helps, of course. Of course.
As fun as the result is, an album with 21 cuts "doesn't happen by chance, it comes from hard work". His ideal workplace is the Villa LaLa in Elfdreißig. With his producers Filous, Johannes Madl and Enzo Gaier (plus Blvth, Nikolai Pothoff and Johannes Römer), he has agreed on minimalist, crisp stompers. The bass sits boldly on the beat, the guitar joins in, riffs and screeches, a synth loops over it in ecstasy. On top of that, there's a veritable litany of perfect pop oneliners: "He who sways has more of the way." Or: "Everyone's waiting for the hook, but that was just the hook." Or: "It doesn't really matter what I say if I express myself well." And so on. You just have to listen.
The work-life balance is also good at BIBIZA. He doesn't work from home and writing diary entries is not for him either. Every song is invented from scratch, right in the studio.
Decadent luxury? Of course. "Viennese decadence"! BIBIZA Franz now has a real band. His homies are Enzo Gaier (guitar), Moritz Meixner (drums), Xaver Nahler (keys/synths) and Markus Windisch (bass). Nothing was given to these guys. They have several tours as an opening act under their belts, and there have been uncomprehending and ignorant crowds as well as friendly and open-minded ones. You learn something from that. Now, in the fall of the twenty-third, the Viennese Schickeria are going on their own tour - and double point: completely sold out. After all, BIBIZA sings: "I'm going to die early, so come to my concerts."
So: If you're not a proletarian, you're not afraid. And anyway, BIBIZA Franz says: "A bit of a thrill in this flat world." Cheers! Over and out.
