Bill Charlap Trio

Bill Charlap’s piano playing is timelessly elegant—swinging, breathing jazz history with every measure, classical through and through, yet gently modernizing. The New York native has perfected the art of the piano trio since he formed his first trio with the Washington brothers on bass and drums a good twenty years ago. In this classic lineup, Bill Charlap has released numerous albums on which he has highlighted the treasures of the Great American Songbook and performed his own compositions.

Bill Charlap comes from a musical family—his father is a Broadway composer, his mother a singer. Their son began playing the piano at age three, then received a classical education, but never lost his early love for jazz. As a young man, he had the opportunity to accompany Gerry Mulligan, Benny Carter, and Phil Woods. Later, he would rise to become one of the most sought-after sidemen on the jazz scene.

In addition, he made a name for himself as the curator of various concert series, as well as a lecturer. His collaboration with the legendary crooner Tony Bennett earned him a Grammy in 2016. Bill Charlap recently made positive headlines through his duo with the magnificent diva Dee Dee Bridgewater.
