Maleika and her 13-year-old son Merlin end up in a neighborhood on the outskirts of town called Heinrich-Paul-Platz. When they move there, they don’t know that the housing complex was once a Nazi family welfare institution for so-called “asocials,” where, from 1936 to
1940, “re-education” was to take place under strict guard. On their very first day, they sense that they are being watched.
Bremen-based author Ulrike Kleinert, born in 1955, explores the following questions: What defines one’s identity? Can one ignore the history of a place, or does it eventually catch up with you?
