In the small, impoverished village of Güllen, the visit of a rich old lady named Claire Zachanassian causes a stir. The residents hope that she will help them regain their wealth and fortune. However, in return for her financial support, the old lady demands the death of resident Alfred Ill. He is her former lover, who abandoned and humiliated her during her pregnancy. As a result, she lost her child and fell into prostitution. Only later did she achieve great wealth through marriage.
