Radio reporter Winkel, acting as a police informer, travels to Gdansk to produce a report on Maciek Tomczyk, the leader of striking trade unionists at the Lenin shipyard. There he meets Tomczyk's companions. Their events, told in flashbacks, reconstruct the image of an insurgent as well as the beginnings of the Solidarność movement. In his award-winning masterpiece from 1981, Andrzej Wajda focuses on the unrest in Poland after 1970, when the military asserted state power against demonstrators. Based on real political events, THE MAN OF IRON paid tribute to a movement that was to have a decisive influence on systemic change in Poland years after its premiere.
