In an innovative way for its time, the film describes the peculiar mood of the young post-war generation, seemingly trapped in a vacuum between yesterday and tomorrow. People with different professions share a common lifestyle: evenings in Warsaw's trendy bars, a love of jazz and an aversion to obligations of any kind.
Andrzej Wajda described his work as his most politically indifferent work. For the authorities of the Gomułka era, however, the film was an irritant. The film, which is reminiscent of the French nouvelle vague and cinema realité, was made at the same time as the masterpieces of Godard and Truffaut and won an award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 1961.
