At the age of 76, Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Annie Ernaux writes about her first sexual experiences at a summer camp in the summer of 1958. Constantly grappling with the unreliability of memory, she wrestles with language and the truth of her own story. How deeply has this experience been etched into her body, her memory, and her life?

Based on Ernaux’s narrative, “Memories of a Girl” explores female socialization, shame, and speechlessness, and serves as a plea for recognizing and upholding personal boundaries. Janine D’Aragona alternates between playing both the older, reflective Annie and her younger self. The play reveals the political within the personal.
