While protests in Iran are being bloodily crushed and people are being systematically executed, Europe is struggling to maintain its stance. Sanctions are being weighed up, diplomatic channels are being kept open and at the same time humanitarian admission programs are being restricted. How credible is a values-based foreign policy when security and economic interests dominate? When does dialogue become the tacit legitimization of repression? And what responsibility does Europe have towards those who risk their lives for freedom?
