Reading as a Means of Survival: A Celebration of Books and Civil Courage. One author, one book, two readings, and a good lunch.
Dangerous Liaisons, from the Bible to the White House—40 Fatal Relationships, with author Christian Pantle
These fatal relationships made history: In the biblical narrative, doom takes its course right from the world’s first couple. As is well known, Eve tempts Adam into the Fall, and their expulsion from Paradise follows. The rest of human history is also rich in fateful affairs with tragic or even deadly outcomes. This book recounts the most famous and most curious of them: Samson & Delilah, Mark Antony & Cleopatra, Marie Antoinette & Louis XVI, Oskar Kokoschka & Alma Mahler, Bonnie & Clyde, Liz Taylor & Richard Burton, and many more.
Dr. Christian Pantleis editor-in-chief of the monthly magazineG/GESCHICHTE andauthor of a series of successful nonfiction books such as*The Peasants’ War*,*The Thirty Years’ War*, and*The Battle of Varus*.
