The new FatJazz format presents in the 1st set mainly master students of the jazz study program with their own compositions. This JazzHall ensemble meets 10 times a semester and rehearses complex modern arrangements under the direction of Gabriel Coburger.
In the 2nd set of the evening, the FatJazz urban exchange series - under the direction of Oliver Nerlich and Gabriel Coburger - will present another modern jazz band. This new quintet plays original compositions by Claus Stötter and Gabriel Coburger. All musicians are professors or lecturers at the Musikhochschule. The lyrical trumpet sound of Claus Stötter and his way of composing in the style of Kenny Wheeler dominates this evening. In total contrast to this is the compositional style of Gabriel Coburger, who is more influenced by Henry Threadgill and John Zorn. Claus Stötter is a particularly versatile musician on the Hamburg jazz scene. Growing up in Swabia, he studied classical trumpet at the Musikhochschule in Stuttgart from 1982 and at the same time devoted himself to jazz as a self-taught musician. He was active as a jazz musician from the very beginning and already won prizes with his jazz trio "Jazz Visions" during his classical studies. In 1990 he was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize. Claus Stötter was one of the few Germans to play in the Orchèstre National de Jazz. Numerous duo concerts with Albert Mangelsdorff shaped his exciting and lyrical playing, which made him a sought-after soloist beyond Germany's borders. His band "Stötters Nevertheless" has been described by "Jazz Podium" as one of the best live bands. Claus Stötter has been a permanent member of the NDR Big Band in Hamburg as solo trumpeter since 1999. Between 1989 and 2006 he was a lecturer for jazz trumpet at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts and since 2008 he has been a member of the jazz teaching team at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama.
