Film- und Infoabend: The Pickers
In the organizer's words:
In Europe, more than two million migrant workers are employed in agriculture. They are an essential part of our food system, and yet many of them work under conditions of modern slavery: unacceptable working and living conditions, pay below the minimum wage, insufficient access to health care, and violations of their fundamental freedoms and human rights.
“The Pickers” is an 80-minute documentary that follows the experiences of six of these migrant workers in four European countries. They harvest oranges in Italy, blueberries in Portugal, strawberries in Spain, and olives in Greece. The film reveals what lies behind the seemingly taken-for-granted availability of inexpensive fruits and vegetables. It makes it clear: The true price of our food is not paid at the checkout counter, but by the people who harvest it.
The screening will be followed by an open discussion.
A collaboration with the Fairtrade Town Essen Steering Committee and VHS Essen.
