Filmvorführung SOUL BOY und anschließender Empowerment Workshop
In the organizer's words:
🎬 Movie: Soul Boy
💬 Afterward: Empowerment workshop with deepower e. V.
Watch a movie, start a conversation, share perspectives.
Together, we’ll watch “Soul Boy” by director Hawa Essuman. The film takes us to Nairobi and tells the story of 14-year-old Abila, who sets out in search of his father’s lost soul. On his journey through Kibera, he must complete seven tasks and, in the process, confront questions about family, friendship, responsibility, courage, and growing up.
Following the film, we’ll continue with an empowerment workshop led by deepower e. V. Together, we’ll explore themes and situations from the film and connect them to our own perspectives and experiences.
What does it mean to forge your own path? Where do we find courage when things get tough? What role do family, friends, and community play? And what images and stories about the realities of life in Africa do we actually encounter in films and the media?
This event is part of our film series“Decolonial Perspectives in Cinema.”
About the Film Series
Through selected films by Black directors and follow-up workshops, we create spaces to watch together, engage in conversation, and discover perspectives that are often underrepresented in cinema and public narratives. The focus is on representation and belonging, on colonial continuities and global inequalities, but just as much on resistance, self-determination, and empowerment.
The film screenings are free and are each followed by a workshop.
“Decolonial Perspectives in Cinema” is a project by deepower e. V. in cooperation with the Africa Film Festival Cologne and is supported by Brot für die Welt.
