“The City Is Coming to Erase It All” is Fink’s ninth studio album, following 2024’s “Beauty In Your Wake.” Recorded in Zennor, Cornwall, the album was created with a strict period-specific approach. I imagine a record that Michael Chapman might have made—right down to the guitar strings. Grammy-winning producer Sam Okell helped guide the process: “If it didn’t exist in 1974, you can’t use it.”
But this is “nowstalgia,” not nostalgia. “I want something new, but with the same ethos,” explains singer Fin Greenall. There’s a parallel between the restless 18-year-olds Fink once were and the middle-aged family men they are now. Going on tour is still both a chore and a joy, even though I’ve performed countless times in every major European city. “The urge to play your new material is so overwhelming that it trumps all the comforts and trappings.”
“City” is a product of this hunger for discovery and this reverence for the album as a form—just as we had it in 1974. The cover of “City” reflects its inner essence; the first song is the greeting, the instrumental piece the conclusion. It’s a story. It’s a record for people who, like its creators, are curious. People who are happy to brave a slight chill for the sake of the music, who light a crackling fire at home, who stay put with these songs until they’re ready to chase their own blue sky.
