LE POP READING | Franziska Setare Koohestani reads from "Hairy Queen - Why body hair is political" on July 18 at 8 pm in the store.
@thefancyfranzy calls herself the "Hairy Queen". And not just because she has always struggled with heavy hair growth, but because she emerges from this battle with her head held high. Back in elementary school, her Iranian aunts sent her bleaching cream to Germany to get rid of her moustache. Since then, she has made several attempts at both hair removal and hair growth acceptance. Today, Franziska Setare Koohestani knows that our approach to body hair has little to do with hygiene and personal care, but rather with the patriarchal, racist and capitalist norms that our society has internalized. Based on historical, cultural and medical sources as well as personal experiences, she explains why body hair is political and points the way to a world in which Hairy Queens are in charge and we can finally deal with our body hair as we do with clothes: confidently, playfully and creatively. Cause baby, we were born this way.
