Denge, a rebellious young man, meets Yasmin one night, a young Indian-Zanzibari woman who has recently been forced into a marriage with a much older man. This encounter is the catalyst for a series of missed opportunities for the unlucky lovers. Denge is deeply involved in the struggle for independence against British rule and translates and distributes Soviet propaganda. She is drawn to his ideals, while he feels free around her. When Denge's youthful recklessness lands him behind bars, it is up to Yasmin to become part of the great struggle and free the one she loves.
