Shimu is in her early 20s and works in a textile factory in Dhaka. She ran away from her village as a teenager to escape an arranged marriage.
In the city, she initially worked as a housemaid. Now she earns better, but the working conditions are characterized by injustice and exploitation. When a short circuit causes a fire, panic breaks out among the fleeing women. One colleague dies, others are more seriously injured, Shimu escapes with a shock. When the workers are then denied part of their wages, some accept it, others protest and decide - on the advice of an NGO - to form a trade union. Shimu takes the initiative and resists the pressure and threats from the management. When Shimu's husband finds out about this, he forbids her from getting involved any further. But the union's registration is almost complete and Shimu is no longer prepared to continue submitting to the patriarchal structures - either at work or in her marriage.
