Defending free spaces: Cultural demonstration on June 06, 2026 in Leipzig

The Global Space Odyssey and NachtRat Leipzig are calling for a joint cultural demonstration under the motto "Spaces for dreams - Reclaim the space!".

On Saturday, June 6, 2026, the Global Space Odyssey will once again make its way through Leipzig. The GSO organizers, NachtRat Leipzig, Livekommbinat Leipzig and the Leipzig nimmt Platz initiative are jointly calling for a cultural demonstration. Under the motto "Spaces for dreams - Reclaim the space!", we are sending a strong signal for a vibrant, diverse cultural landscape and against displacement, political austerity measures and right-wing attacks.

Culture in distress - we are taking to the streets

Leipzig's independent cultural scene is the heart of this city - but it is under massive pressure: progressive gentrification, increasing conflicts of use, political cutbacks, right-wing agitation and a lack of legal protection for cultural spaces are threatening its existence. At the same time, young people in particular lack places where they can be creative, exchange ideas and develop without economic pressure.

"Culture is not a luxury, but the basis of a vibrant democracy. We must protect spaces for creative, social and political development - before they disappear."

Leipzig is growing faster than almost any other city in Germany. As a result, existing cultural and open spaces are coming under increasing pressure: residential development is moving closer, conflicts with residents are increasing and legal regulations offer little protection. Bureaucratic hurdles, financial bottlenecks and a lack of resources often lead to the permanent closure of these places.

Together with Leipzig's cultural institutions and initiatives, the Global Space Odyssey brings the diversity of the scene to the streets - loudly, in solidarity and visibly.

Demo finale and after-show party

Of course, there will also be a joint demo finale after the demo. The demo will end at Wilhelm-Külz-Park, where a final rally including DJ sets and speeches awaits you until 10 pm.

It's not over after that either! From 10 pm, the Distillery will open its doors for the GSO after-show party. The Elipamanoke will follow suit at 11:59 pm and you can let the demo fade away until the morning on the dance floors of both clubs.
