HOMAGE AN „PIWNICA POD BARANAMI" - KONRAD MASTYŁO & FRIENDS

In 1956, Piotr Skrzynecki and fellow artists founded the
“Piwnica pod Baranami” (Cellar Under the Rams) in Kraków. The student club
quickly developed into one of the most important cultural institutions
in Poland. Under the communist regime, the cellar was regarded as an island of freedom
and hope. Despite censorship, the stage used poetry, music, and
subtle humor—offered criticism of the system. Skrzynecki and Janina
Garycka shaped the style; they were the thinkers and guardian angels of the cellar. They
discovered and promoted exceptional artists who went on to become legends
—such as Ewa Demarczyk, Jacek Wójcicki, and Marek Grechuta.

Pianist Konrad Mastyło, who served as the backbone of the
ensemble for over 20 years, is a guest in Cologne. The theater composer composed the music
for films such as Kieslowski’s *Decalogue*, *The Two Lives of Veronika*, and *Three
Colors, was a member of the legendary group ANAWA, and is a lecturer at
the Krakow Theater Academy. On September 6, he will perform the great Polish chansons with musicians from Poland and
Cologne. The exhibition “PIWNICA POD
BARANAMI on tour 1986” by Cologne photographer Marek Szymczak brings this
special story come alive again.

In 1956, Piotr Skrzynecki, together with a group of artists, founded
“Piwnica pod Baranami” in Kraków. This student club quickly became
one of the most important cultural institutions in Poland. During the
communism, Piwnica was seen as a vibrant oasis of freedom and
hope. Despite censorship, this scene—through poetry, music, and subtle
humor. Skrzynecki and Janina Garycka
shaped its character; they were its ideologues and guardian angels. They discovered
and supported outstanding artists who went on to become legends in Poland—
such as Ewa Demarczyk, Jacek Wójcicki, and Marek Grechuta.

Pianist Konrad Mastyło, who for over 20 years was a pillar
of the band, is performing in Cologne. The theater composer has recorded, among other things, the music
for Krzysztof Kieślowski’s films *Dekalog*, *Two Lives
" and “Three Colors,” and was a member of the legendary band ANAWA. In
Cologne, he performs great Polish songs together with musicians from Poland and
Cologne. The exhibition “PIWNICA POD BARANAMI on tour 1986” by
