16-year-old Chris Parker, alias Alli, wanders lonely through New York and through life, from "here to here", without a job, without money, without a goal. His mother is mentally ill, his father has run away. He meets people, outsiders like him, who persist in their speechlessness and apathy.

Jim Jarmusch's first film from 1980 is a relaxed story about the idleness of the world and a sonorous portrait of New York, accompanied by Javanese music and saxophone improvisations by actor and musician John Lurie. Jarmusch unofficially dedicated the film to director Nicholas Ray ("... because they don't know what they're doing"), who died the day before filming began and had a great influence on Jarmusch.
