CARBIDE AND SOUR RAMMER
GDR 1963 - 85' - Director: Frank Beyer

After the end of the war, Dresden worker Kalle Blücher sets off for Wittenberge because there are still supplies of carbide there that are urgently needed to rebuild his workplace, a cigarette factory. He manages to get hold of seven barrels, but the way back proves difficult - by hitchhiking, as he has no means of transportation. The friendly Karla takes him a short distance in her cart. He would prefer to stay with her, but first he has to fulfill his mission. Thus begins an adventurous journey for Kalle across destroyed Germany. Along the way, he meets a wide variety of people, including soldiers of the occupying forces, suspicious civilians and helpful strangers. Again and again he gets into funny or dicey situations from which he has to free himself with ingenuity and humor. In the end, he only comes back with part of the carbide, but that is enough to make reconstruction possible.
