Palestine, 1936: More and more villages are rising up against the British colonial power, which is enforcing its authority through violence. At the same time, European Jews who have fled Nazism are settling in the region. Yusuf, an impartial young man, shuttles back and forth between his rural home village and Jerusalem, where tensions are mounting. After a fateful event, the young man sides with the resistance. He joins allies such as the dockworker Khalid, who, in light of the escalating situation, sees no other way out than to take up arms. As personal fates and political upheavals inexorably intertwine, the situation comes to a dramatic head—a decisive moment that marks the origin of the conflict throughout the entire region.
Guest: Prof. Dr. Abed Shokry
Prof. Dr. Abed Shokry comes from a large Palestinian family in Gaza. After completing his studies and earning his doctorate in Germany, he returned to Gaza and taught industrial relations at the Islamic University of Gaza. Abed Shokry has five children and lived in Gaza during the war until, after great effort, he finally managed to leave—first for Egypt and then for Germany.
What does the historical portrayal of Palestine in Jacir’s film have to do with us today? How do the media shape our perception of Palestine? What is life really like for people in Palestine? We will discuss these and other questions with Mr. Shokry.
