How close is too close? Learn how space and distance subconsciously influence our interpersonal communication. Based on Edward T. Hall’s theory of proxemics, this seminar analyzes the effects of closeness and distance and helps you feel confident in navigating different personal space zones so you can consciously shape your impact in both your professional and personal life.
COURSE CONTENT
- Introduction to proxemics: definition, historical context, and the significance of space as a factor in communication
- The four distance zones according to Edward T. Hall: intimate distance, personal distance, social distance, and public distance
- Spatial behavior in everyday life: The impact of seating arrangements, spatial design in education, counseling, and leadership, as well as territorial behavior
- Intercultural perspective: Differences in proximity-distance behavior and avoiding intercultural misunderstandings
- Practical Application: Partner and group exercises, role-plays, case studies, and reflections
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
Participants will understand the fundamentals of proxemics as an essential part of nonverbal communication and will be familiar with the specific distance zones according to Edward T. Hall. They will learn to recognize cultural differences in the use of space and proximity and to critically reflect on their own distance behavior. The goal is to develop greater confidence in various contexts such as counseling, leadership, teaching, or nursing.
