According to rumors, the band MalKapaun from Kassel/Alfeld (Leine) once consisted of 13 members, all of whom—except for one—gradually disappeared under mysterious circumstances. While this tale, passed down over centuries, cannot be verified, one thing is now certain: That one remaining member is indeed still alive and seems more than ready to musically present to his audience all the facets of life he knows and to tell the true story of the band.

The band’s musical style is referred to in technical jargon as “Chaos-Pop,” and the following recipe is often cited as its source:

Take German-language lyrics, infuse them with a generous helping of darkly humorous stories (sometimes social, sometimes personal), and season them liberally with wordplay, metaphors, and sarcasm. Switch and shift perspectives repeatedly throughout. Sometimes rap the lyrics, sometimes sing them, and occasionally forget them entirely (give it a light shake and then let it sit for a bit, which should allow a slight punk rock ethos to unfold). The accompaniment consists solely of an acoustic guitar, which is allowed to come through louder or softer at times (please note: no effects, no plastic, no bells and whistles—this makes the music completely biodegradable). Now put all the ingredients into an overpriced Thermomix, wait for the intro, and voilà—the so-called “Chaos-Pop” is ready.
