The RMS JazzOrchestra, the big band of the Rheinische Musikschule Köln (RMS), is regarded as an outstanding amateur big band and talent factory. Former members such as Till Brönner, Bruno Müller and Markus Stockhausen are now making their mark on the current jazz scene. For over 50 years now, music students, pupils and professionals have been rehearsing every Monday evening and performing regularly: first at Bogen 2, then at Klub Berlin, most recently at the Urania Theater, making the band a permanent institution in Cologne.
After Karel Krautgartner and Prof. Jiggs Whigham, saxophonist, composer and arranger Michael Villmow has led this dynamic and colorful ensemble since the 1990s; his successor since spring 2022 is Cologne trumpeter Martin Reuthner.
The aim of the ensemble is to cultivate the jazz tradition with pieces by greats such as Sammy Nestico, Thad Jones and Duke Ellington as well as contemporary compositions by Bob Mintzer and Peter Herbolzheimer. Thanks to good contacts with former RMS members who are now professional musicians, well-known soloists complement the demanding and varied program at the performances.
