Literatur & Haltung: „Mischka“

Reading & discussion with Barbara Honigmann and Marie Schmidt (moderator):

The new reading series "Literature & Attitude" opens with Barbara Honigmann. The author will read from her novel "Mischka" (Hanser 2026), in which she tells of the lives and survival of her parents' friends - young Jewish communist intellectuals who survived Nazi camps and the Gulag, paid heavily for their convictions and still found ways to resist. Honigmann portrays their memories precisely, warmly and with subtle humor.

The "Literature & Attitude" series presents literary voices that are characterized by linguistic independence and intellectual determination. It follows in the tradition of the literary store founded by Rachel Salamander as a place for thinking, remembering and writing.

Barbara Honigmann, born in East Berlin in 1949, worked as a dramaturge and director. In 1984 she emigrated with her family to Strasbourg, where she still lives today. Honigmann's work has been awarded numerous prizes, including the Heinrich Kleist Prize, the Max Frisch Prize of the City of Zurich, the Jakob Wassermann Prize, the Bremen Literature Prize 2020, the Jean Paul Prize 2021, the Literature Prize of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation 2022, the Goethe Prize of the City of Frankfurt 2023, and most recently the Schiller Memorial Prize 2024, the Jehuda Amichai Literature Prize and the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon. Hanser has previously published "Damals, dann und danach" (1999), "Alles, alles Liebe!" (novel, 2000), "Ein Kapitel aus meinem Leben" (2004), "Das Gesicht wiederfinden" (2007), "Das überirdische Licht" (Return to New York, 2008), "Chronik meiner Straße" (2015), "Georg" (2019) and most recently "Unverschämt jüdisch" (2021).
