LITTLE BARRIE *live
In the organizer's words:
Little Barrie (Easy Eye Sound/UK) *live*
In the grand tradition of great British rock bands and inspired by a love of American blues, funk and soul, Little Barrie's sixth studio album is the first to be released exclusively under the band's name since the death of drummer Virgil Howe in September 2017. The LP follows more than two decades of activity that established the band as a major force in British psychedelic rock and soul. Following Howe's death, Cadogan and founding bassist Lewis Wharton put the band's future on hold.
After initial plans to resume making music were thwarted by the Covid-19 pandemic, the pair began collaborating with their longtime friend Malcolm Catto (The Heliocentrics). This partnership resulted in two albums: "Quatermass Seven" (2020) and "Electric War", which was released by Easy Eye Sound in April 2025. On "Gravity Freeze", the hooks are more concise, the grooves are deeper and the atmosphere is denser, which ties in with the band's earlier, highly acclaimed works.
"Have you ever had sleep paralysis?" Cadogan asks when talking about the title track of the trio's latest work. "That's what 'Gravity Freeze' is about. It's like a nickname I've given to that moment when you've woken up and you're still dreaming. The first time that happened to me, I freaked out because I couldn't move but I didn't know if I was awake or not. It's a very strange feeling and you do weird things like try to walk through closets. There are a few elements on the album that reflect what we've been through over the last few years. We've been through a lot, some of it we're still processing."
Work on the LP began in late 2023 and the album was recorded at Rat Salad Studios in Hornsey, North London, with Rupert Lyddon acting as engineer and co-producer. Continuing the band's tried and tested DIY approach, early demos were recorded in a cold room in Dalston, surrounded by incomplete drums, art equipment and random pieces of wood and metal, before the official recording sessions began. Coote joined the band for the album, contributing performances influenced by classic jazz, soul and blues rhythms. The recordings took place alongside Cadogan's touring and session guitarist commitments, including work with Liam Gallagher and John Squire, The Black Keys and THE THE, as well as sessions at Easy Eye Sound Studios in Nashville.
"Gravity Freeze" was written and compiled with the vinyl release in mind and marks the 25th anniversary since Little Barrie's first singles on Stark Reality. The release represents a new chapter for the band, after a nine-year hiatus since their last studio album.
