Hailing from the coastal communities around Enoshima, a small island 50 km southwest of Tokyo, Maya Ongaku is a motley collective of local musicians whose down-to-earth psychedelia extends far beyond the roots of their inner souls. The name is not derived from an ancient civilization, but is a neologism defined as the imaginary view beyond one's own field of vision. The band - currently a trio consisting of Tsutomu Sonoda, Ryota Takano and Shoei Ikeda - finds refuge in the Ace General Store, a vintage beach-style store and salon-like space somewhat hidden away from the busy, touristy Subana street on the riverbank. Between talking about music and art, curating the vinyl section and manning the till, and chatting with locals of all ages, the members find time to jam and record their spontaneous ideas in the hidden studio in the back room. It is in this unusual setting that Maya Ongaku originated, as the culmination of what Sonoda describes as 自然発生 (shizen hassei), meaning spontaneous generation or the supposed creation of living organisms from non-living matter.
