Kintsugi is a centuries-old Japanese method of repairing ceramics by deliberately highlighting the broken areas with gold.
"Finding beauty in the ephemeral."
Perfectionism and consumerism are ubiquitous. A wonderful contrast to this is offered by the philosophy of Wabi Sabi, in which the roots of Kintsugi are anchored.
The Mindful Mending workshop is inspired by the traditional Kintsugi technique.
This evening is not about the final product, but about the process itself, the shared feeling and the immersion in the beauty of imperfection.
Birgit Depenbrock, certified restorer for ceramics, will show you how to repair a broken object with the right technique and how to gild your own broken pieces in the process.
Working material, protective clothing, tools as well as the broken pieces will be provided for you.
Afterwards you can take the pottery you have repaired with your own hands with you.
Birgit will guide you in such a way that you do NOT need any previous craft knowledge.
About Birgit
Birgit Depenbrock is a certified restorer for ceramics, among other things.
She studied restoration and conservation of archaeological cultural property in Berlin and worked as a restorer at the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum for 16 years.
Kintsugi offers an absolute contrast to the traditional restorer's work at the museum. Broken pieces are highlighted with pride.
The Kintsugi philosophy has helped her find a form of resilience in her own life that she would like to share with you.
