Paris im Spiegel der Zeit: Verwandlung einer Weltstadt von der Antike bis heute

In the organizer's words:

The French capital is one of the European metropolises that has undergone major changes to its appearance over the course of history through periodic destruction and new construction; the attractions that are popular today were not realized as a backdrop for tourists from all over the world, but it is to the credit of ingenious artists to have given original power games and functional ideas a form that is still respectable today.

From the small ancient settlement on the Seine to the Roman colony and the seat of government of the Frankish kings to the glorious era of the absolutist monarchy and the Empire, not to mention the most modern landmarks: Each era has given Paris a new face to suit the self-image of the respective rulers and to erase the memory of previous governments - although some striking evidence of earlier times does remain.

The two thousand years of the Ville Lumière are fast-forwarded through numerous pictures that impressively illustrate the work of various historical personalities (including Francis I, Catherine de' Medici, Louis XIV, Cardinal Richelieu, the two Napoleons and Georges Pompidou).

Dr. Donatella Chiancone-Schneider has a doctorate in art history, is a freelance curator and popular science art educator. She has been teaching at the Cologne VHS for 25 years as part of individual lectures, multi-part courses and interactive formats. Her lecture tours in recent years have taken her to countless cities in Germany as well as to Italy, Austria, Poland, Denmark and Switzerland.
