Johnny Farrell is a down-and-out gambler stranded in Buenos Aires. Just in time to escape some serious trouble, he lands a job at the casino owned by the wealthy Ballin Mundson. As World War II draws to a close, Mundson—an influential businessman in his own right—goes on a trip and temporarily puts Farrell in charge of the casino. Upon his return, Mundson brings along the attractive Gilda as his newlywed wife. During a dinner party at Mundson’s house, Johnny Farrell meets Gilda, and it becomes clear that the two know each other. However, they keep their shared past a secret from Mundson. Later that night, Gilda dances at the casino with Captain Delgado, to whom she unabashedly gives her phone number. Farrell discovers that his patron, Mundson, uses unconventional methods to avoid drawing the attention of local authorities. Ballin Mundson, for his part, begins to suspect something about Johnny and Gilda…
