During a hospital visit, the overweight and frustrated housewife Evelyn meets the quirky, fun-loving Ninny. The encounter with the old lady changes Evelyn's life, which is also felt by her husband. This development is triggered by Ninny's exciting story of an incredible female friendship in the 1930s: In the southern states, Idgie and Ruth open the 'Whistle Stop Café' together, where both blacks and whites are served. This brings the Ku Klux Klan and especially Ruth's violent ex-husband Frank onto the scene. But the women know how to fight back...
