In the beginning was the egg. Or was it the chicken? On a chicken farm, there’s little time for the most existential of all questions. It is the fate of these fluffy birds to be sent on their way—straight from the hatch, across factory conveyor belts and highways—and all too often to end up in a soup pot. As luck would have it, one day on a Greek chicken farm, a black-feathered and particularly clever little chicken hatches and sets off into the big, wide world. After a rendezvous at a gas station with a hungry fox, it hitches a ride on a truck. But a dog drags the unruly bird into the backyard of a run-down restaurant. Its aging owner only appears to be better off, for the place is no longer doing well, and bad-tempered smugglers come and go. A new chapter begins for the chicken: It proves itself in the chicken coop hierarchy, squabbles with turkeys, wins the rooster’s heart, and explores new territory in search of a nesting spot. In the process, it stumbles into the criminal entanglements of the family living there, who are themselves fighting for survival—and in doing so, inevitably thwart the intrepid hen’s wish for chicks.
