Queer Lindy Hop beginner workshop - fit for your first social dance! Sat, June 27, 2026
Queer & fancy music, movement and trying out a couple's dance together?
Then come to our three-hour Lindy Hop workshop on 27.06.2026 at 10:45 am!
Lindy Hop is an energetic couple's dance from the swing family. It originated in the 1920s and 30s in the African-American community in the USA and is the predecessor of other dances such as the boogie-woogie or the jive. Today, Lindy Hop is danced all over the world - at dance parties, festivals and in parks.
In this workshop you will learn the most important basics of Lindy Hop. It is danced in pairs: however, we do not follow traditional gender roles. Everyone has the opportunity to learn both the lead and the follow. So you can try out both roles and it's great fun!
The focus is on having fun moving to the music.
We start with a short solo jazz warm-up, practise simple steps and combine them into first figures such as send-out or pass-by. We also give a brief insight into the history and origins of Lindy Hop: this dance developed from other dance styles within the African-American community and is closely linked to the history of jazz. It reached its peak during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1930s and 40s, during the Big Band era.
The course will be given in German (and, if necessary, also in English).
The aim of the workshop is to gain your first experience of Lindy Hop so that you feel confident at your first social dance (dance party) and can discover the joy of dancing together.
Lindy Hop is always danced with another person; an important value in the Lindy Hop community is the constant changing of dance partners during the lessons, which is why we also do it in the course. We have found that the constant changing helps us a lot in the learning process and you get to know new people in an uncomplicated way in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
→ Open to anyone who identifies as queer in any way
→ No prior knowledge required
→ No couple registration necessary - we regularly change dance partners
→ Safer space: unisex single toilet cubicles
Shoes:
In Lindy Hop, comfortable shoes without heels are recommended for both dance roles (leader and follower). Many Lindy hoppers simply wear sneakers, but dance shoes with leather soles are also suitable. Please do not wear street shoes for class!
Clothes:
Light, comfortable clothing is recommended - you will get warm while dancing. We advise against wearing jeans. A change of T-shirt and a small towel are standard equipment for many Lindy Hoppers.
Childcare
If you wish, you can bring your children with you. There is plenty of space inside next to the dance floor and outside and two volunteers who can look after and entertain them if necessary. Unfortunately there are no toys on site, so feel free to bring your favorite toy, a ball or whatever!
Please let us know if you would like to use the childcare and how old your children are. Then we can plan a bit.
Who we are
We are a group of queer Lindy Hop dancers from Cologne. We want to make the Cologne swing scene more queer-friendly and create a safer space for LGBTQIA+ dancers. For us, Lindy Hop means joie de vivre, community and expression - and we would be delighted if more queer people discovered this dance for themselves.
