What does it mean to be "really" American? New York, late 1990s: Lily Chen, daughter of Chinese immigrants, works as an unpaid intern in a media company. She falls in love with Matthew Maier, heir to a billion-dollar company. From this encounter, Rachel Khong, born in Malaysia in 1985 and raised in California, develops a family story about origin and belonging. Since her debut "Goodbye, Vitamin" in 2017, Rachel Khong has been one of the most important voices in young American literature. In her new novel (Kiepenheuer & Witsch // Engl. by Tobias Schnettler), which has been acclaimed by the media and readers, she spans decades and continents with psychological precision.
