A Mummy for Tea tells the story of European Egyptomania in the 19th and early 20th centuries: from Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign and the *Description de l’Égypte* to Tutankhamun’s tomb, Nile cruises, unwrapping parties, Egyptian-style furniture, fashion, music, and everyday objects. The lecture explores how scientific curiosity, a love of travel, a colonial perspective, and pop culture gave rise to an image of Egypt that remains influential to this day—while also examining Orientalism, cultural artifacts, and how we engage with this fascination today.

The evening takes us on a journey through this European enthusiasm for Ancient Egypt—from Napoleon to Nile cruises and unwrapping parties, all the way to Egyptian-style everyday objects and early forms of modern pop culture. The focus is not only on the fascination with the exotic, but also on questions regarding the handling of cultural heritage, Orientalism, and the enduring influence of Egypt to this day.
