In light of the changing security situation in Europe, the German Armed Forces face major challenges. There is a shortage of personnel, while at the same time the reintroduction of mandatory military service is the subject of heated debate. Differing expectations and attitudes are particularly evident between the generations. Underlying this are fundamental questions: How far does one’s personal responsibility toward society extend? What does it mean today to be committed to a state? And what can or must be expected of those who are called upon to serve?

David Matei draws on his own experiences from over fourteen years in the Bundeswehr. After serving as a mountain infantryman, he most recently worked in public relations as a youth officer and reaches a wide audience through his posts on social media. He has been grappling with the meaning and contradictions of military service for many years.

This evening offers a personal yet informed perspective on questions of duty, conviction, and social engagement in a time of growing uncertainty.
