Sauna culture in southern Estonia has made it onto the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. However, Anna Hint’s feature-length debut is anything but a didactic cultural film; instead, she imbues this seemingly archaic tradition with a mythical quality. The filmmaker immerses herself in a group of women who share their secrets in the dim light of a steamy sauna hut, take ice baths in the lake, or smoke bacon over a fire. The film won the Directing Prize for International Documentaries at Sundance.
