In the late 1960s, college graduate Robert Mapplethorpe meets the vivacious Patti Smith in New York, unaware that she would later rise to become the queen of punk rock and that he himself would achieve fame. Together, the young couple moves into the Chelsea Hotel, the hub of the young, modern art scene. With a camera he was given as a gift, Mapplethorpe ventures into his first photographic experiments. After coming to terms with his homosexuality, his art becomes increasingly erotic. Initially rejected as pornography, he finds patrons whom he also turns into his lovers. Mapplethorpe’s work becomes a sensation, but his almost obsessive struggle for recognition and his excessive lifestyle drive the ambitious artist ever closer to the brink.
