In 1977, Marcelo flees with his son from the henchmen of the military dictatorship. A resistance group in Recife takes him in and secures him a job at a government office. There, he encounters a corrupt police commissioner who covers up murders during Carnival. “Urban sensuality meets dark humor and a wild thriller plot: In his film—which won multiple awards at Cannes—Kleber Mendonça Filho paints a visually intoxicating panorama of 1970s Brazil.”
