August Sander – Marking the 150th Anniversary of His Birth
September 11, 2026 – January 24, 2027

To mark the 150th birthday of August Sander (1876–1964), the Photographic Collection/Culture Foundation of Sparkasse KölnBonn is presenting a comprehensive exhibition drawn from its in-house August Sander Archive, the world’s largest collection of the photographer’s work. On display are, among other things, portraits from his cultural and social project*People of the 20th Century*, early works from Linz, and commissioned works from the Westerwald.

A key focus is Cologne, where Sander lived and worked for over 30 years. The series “August Sander Photography Studio, Cologne-Lindenthal” offers impressive insights into his living and working environment. In addition, landscape photographs from the Rhine region, the Siebengebirge, and the Eifel, as well as photographs from his 1927 trip to Sardinia—a rare historical visual record of the island—are on display.

Visitors to the exhibition can also listen to six radio lectures in which Sander articulated his photographic philosophy for WDR in 1931; these have now been edited and annotated for the first time and are available in book form. The exhibition is generously supported by the Kunststiftung NRW.

💡Public guided tours: Every Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
