Public themed tour - Legend has it that the town's founder, Frederick I Barbarossa, fell madly in love with a count's daughter whom he was unable to marry, but after whom he named the town. According to legend, the devil helped to build St. Mary's Church, a long-established family descended from ennobled executioners and a widow priest fell victim to witchcraft. Monks hid in bells and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe himself had a downright supernatural apparition outside Gelnhausen. A miraculous rabbi worked in the 19th century and at the same time Clemens Brentano had his fairy tale of Gockel, Hinkel and Gackeleia set in Gelnhausen.
To cut a long story short: Gelnhausen is fabulous and virtually legendary!
