Martha and Paul live together in a happy, trusting relationship. They share a beautiful home, their circle of friends and their sense of humor. The two are a well-rehearsed team.

After graduating in medicine, Paul gets the chance to go to Marseille. Martha wants to move with him and can work as a teacher at an international school. Paul drives up in his car and Martha does the final tidying up in the apartment. But then two policewomen suddenly turn up at the door and everything changes. Martha's world collapses. The man Martha has lived with for years is a phantom. Nothing in Martha's life is as it was, and nothing was as it seemed. Who was Paul really? Did she really know him? Martha cannot understand that she is suddenly alone.

At some point, she meets Alexander. A small gesture is enough for her to discover the lost Paul in Alexander. She plunges into a new relationship with him and her life seems to repeat itself. Can Alexander replace Paul? Martha tries to find her own way of dealing with Paul's disappearance and her crisis.
