Urban Strings & Mysteriensonaten

A unique manuscript was rediscovered a good 100 years ago: Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber's Rosary Sonatas: a sequence of three times five sonatas for violins with 15 different string tunings on the mysteries of faith. They are regarded as one of the highlights of European Baroque music. In the Christuskirche, they can be heard throughout the room - as the music itself dictates and in an unusual version for seven violins, viola, double bass, organ and harpsichord.

The rich diversity of Biber's works is further enhanced by the fact that the musicians have developed an arrangement/transcription for 2 strings for some of the sonatas for this project. Sometimes two violins correspond and divide the parts over large distances, sometimes the violone grosso joins in where Biber prescribed it or elsewhere to enrich the continuo, and the viola enters the cycle in the same function (harmony and basso continuo).
