Urlaub in Köln | Fledermausmeeting | zu Fuß

In the organizer's words:

🦇 Bat meeting | on foot

📅 Saturday, July 18, 2026, 9 p.m.

Bats are mammals that can fly. They are endangered because there is unfortunately less and less food and places for them to retreat to. The Adenauer Weiher is a small paradise for bats in the city. There is plenty of dead wood in the forest here, where insects - and therefore food for the bats - live. We experience an impressive natural phenomenon in the middle of the city.

A bat consumes between 1,000 and 2,000 mosquitoes per night. Their orientation works with ultrasound: bats emit sounds that are inaudible to us and process the echoes into a spatial "auditory image". Susanne Roer lets us hear their sounds with the help of an ultrasound detector.

When the common noctule and the common pipistrelle go on the hunt for mosquitoes, things get wild in Cologne.

🕑 Duration: 1.5 - 2 hours
🔍 Expert: Susanne Roer
📍 Meeting point: Jahnwiesen/Guts-Muths-Weg 3, 50933 Cologne (Astoria parking lot)

Note: The Toten Hosen will be playing at the Rheinenergiestadion on 18.7. 2026. The parking situation will most likely be difficult then. Please come by bike if possible. P.S. When ACDC were guests in the stadium, the bats were still out and about. If you're hungry, go mosquito hunting, even if the Toten Hosen are playing.

📅 Date repetition: Saturday, July 25, 2026 - 9 pm
