Advertising and desire in capitalism. A brief cultural theory
Lecture by Leon Hartmann

"Everything becomes advertising", wrote the French philosopher and media theorist Jean Baudrillard back in 1981, an observation that still applies today. Aren't we constantly surrounded by advertising? Hasn't advertising permeated almost all areas of cultural life? Isn't our desire and behavior within the capitalist world constantly shaped and determined by advertising? Is there still a cultural realm beyond the world's advertising?
Leon Hartmann studied philosophy, German literature and media aesthetics in Freiburg and Cologne. He received his doctorate from the University of Freiburg in 2025, where he teaches at the Department of Philosophy. In 2026, his dissertation entitled Die Regierbarkeit der Zukunft. Democracy - basic income - narrative.
