Götz Aly is one of the most important authors on the history of National Socialism and the Holocaust. How could this happen? Deutschland 1933 bis 1945 is his magnum opus: with great precision, he describes the methods of rule with which the Nazi rulers turned millions of Germans into compliant enforcers and war-jaded accomplices - through mechanisms that seem disturbingly topical today. At phil.COLOGNE, he will meet political scientist Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook, an expert on US politics. In The American Wake-Up Call , she analyzes the authoritarian restructuring and the erosion of democracy by President Trump and recognizes the first signs of these patterns in Europe as well.
